He was always polite, but one suspected, as one of his Tavistock colleagues AN INTRODUCTION 23 suggested, that “He was miles behind his face”. His style in lecturing was interesting. He always spoke without notes. ” He hinted, suggested, and implied but would never pontificate. In his analytic as well as in his published works one quickly detects his unique capacity for keen observation. It was as if he could see through the camouflage of long-established symbols and icons and detect the deeper and more meaningful substance that lurked behind them.
I have often wondered whether he had become frozen in time as the protective “older-brother” tank commander who must perpetually look out for the safety of his men (and women)—at a respectful distance, true noblesse oblige—having been haunted by his comradesin-arms, those real troops who did not survive. Until recently the concept of trauma has not been emphasized in psychoanalytic thinking generally and in Kleinian thinking specifically. The emphasis was generally on psychosis. One wonders whether, in Bion’s analysis with Klein, the latter was really able to deal effectively with the trauma he had suffered—that is, in the First World War—when it was the world that was psychotic (“I died on August 8, 1918 on the Amiens–Roye Road”), his wife dying in childbirth, and so on.
Curiously, he would probably have become the heir-apparent and successor to Klein and highly respected there for his early works on psychosis, the container and the contained, L, H, and K linkages, and communicative projective identification, each of which became standard Kleinian thinking and basic components of the “post-Kleinian” episteme in London, especially as practised by Betty Joseph and her followers. In other words, following Klein’s death, Bion could have easily become the titular head of the Kleinian movement, but the extreme nature of his English individuality as a free thinker, not unlike that of Winnicott, marginalized him early on in the eyes of Klein’s CentralEuropean-born followers and those who came after them (Sutherland, 1994; personal communication, 1966).
